Rocky Mountain Goat Photos

The ROCKY MOUNTAIN GOAT is a resident of the high mountains in the western half of North America. It stands 3‘ high at the shoulder, and a large male, or billie, can occasionally reach 300 pounds. Its feet are especially well adapted to its high-altitude domicile. It has a cloven, or split, hoof with soft interior pads. The interior pads help provide traction, and the edges of the hoof can “bite in” as needed to prevent slippage. Both males and females have horns, which are not shed. All of these photos were taken on Mount Evans in early August as the animals were shedding the last few bits of the previous year's coat.
